Cherwell Street (Banbury) improvements update
6 May 2026
We are working to improve bus journey times into and out of Banbury town centre by widening traffic lanes and making improvements to pedestrian crossings traffic signals between the George Street and Bridge Street junctions. Construction started in January 2026 and will finish this summer.

Traffic management update

From the week beginning Monday 11 May, we will be excavating to install ducting at the junction of Lower Cherwell Street and Cherwell Street. Work will take place during the day.

Vehicle access to Lower Cherwell Street from Cherwell Street will still be available.

The footway on both sides of the junction will be closed with pedestrian diversions clearly marked and signed onsite.

This is phase 1H of work and we are now more than half way through construction. For all remaining phases the following will apply:
  • Temporary traffic lights with controlled pedestrian crossings will be implemented during the works.
  • Pedestrian and vehicle diversions and changes will be clearly marked. Please follow them for your own safety.
  • The timeline for the work may change if we need to work around any discoveries in the ground or poor weather conditions.
Day time work continuing throughout May

George Street junction

We are constructing new carriageway, ducting and kerbing. The bus lane and left-hand turning lane on George Street towards Cherwell Street will be closed. The left-hand lane on Windsor Street will also be closed.

Bridge Street junction

We are excavating to install ducting, and constructing drainage, kerbing, and footways along the southbound footway on Concord Avenue and the westbound footway on Bridge Street east.

At the Bridge Street junction, the southbound left turn lane on Concord Avenue will be closed. On Cherwell Street, the left-turn lane for northbound traffic will be closed. Lane narrowing along Bridge Street east will be implemented.
