Wellington Bomber Memorial

On Thursday 28th December 2023 a group of the Bodicote Community and other local supporters including serving RAF, Royal Air Force Association, Royal British Legion and Bodicote Parish Council attended an anniversary commemoration at the memorial in Bodicote to the six aircrew of Wellington Bomber BK517 that died in Bodicote when their aircraft crashed on that date in 1942.

One of the airmen that was lost on that fateful day was Aircraftsman Second Class John Beaumont RAF VR and the commemoration was privileged and honoured to have AC2 Beaumont's niece, Jane Beaumont, attend with her son Samuel. Jane was pleased that her son and other children were able to learn about the heraldic events of another generation in order that their memories and activities can be remembered for years to come.

The service was introduced by a narrative and history of the accident supported by an eyewitness account. This was followed by a short, moving ceremony with bugle accompaniment, dedicated to the honour of these six courageous airmen.

A big thank you to all those who supported and contributed to this poignant event.

Airmen honoured

Members of Bodicote Parish Council and village residents along with assorted dogs gathered on a cold, rainy and muddy Remembrance Sunday to honour the airmen who perished when the Wellington bomber they were flying crashed in fields to the west of Bodicote during the second world war.

This short ceremony is held every year led by GrahamWyeth. Thank you to everyone who braved the conditions to pay their respects to these brave men.

Bodicote Circular Walk is on the map!

A colourful and beautifully illustrated map of the circular walk around the boundaries of the historic village of Bodicote has been produced by Oxfordshire artist Paul Tomlinson.

Funded by a Covid grant it has been sited at the starting point of the 3.6 mile walk on the edge of the historic Saltway and an unveiling ceremony was attended by Paul and members of Bodicote Parish Council, who commissioned the project.

Chair Joyce Washburn said the village authority is keen to encourage greater use of the walk which features points of local interest and a wonderful variety of wildlife.
